Our Story

Picture
The Pantry Shelf Café opened in beautiful downtown Port Perry in September 1998. Elizabeth Browne was fresh out of university at the young age of 24. She graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce at Ryerson University in the Hospitality and Tourism Program. It was, however, growing up in the food industry that was a solid foundation for success.
It all began when Elizabeth's Grandmother started selling baked goods in Coe Hill, Ontario after the war. Later, in 1985 Elizabeth's mother Karen opened the original Pantry Shelf Tea Room & Bake Shop located in Hillsburgh, Ontario. This is where all the famous recipes originated from. For over 35 years Karen had a successful business with a loyal clientele from all over Southern Ontario. It was a must stop for cottagers, shoppers in the area, and of course the locals.
Residing just north of Port Perry with husband Patrick of 20 years and two children Elizabeth is still hard at work and loving it. Owning a business certainly has it's challenges but it also gives freedom and flexibility to raise a family. Elizabeth's children (Mackenzie and Owen) now work at the café carrying on the family tradition.
There is an incredible team working with Elizabeth at The Pantry Shelf Café and it is their passion to continue to serve quality, homemade food in a family oriented atmosphere.
